Tubeless Mountain Bike Setup: Parts and Maintenance Checklist

A tubeless mountain bike setup uses a compatible tire and rim to retain air without a conventional inner tube. Getting the right components matters more than following a universal shopping list.

The core components

  • Compatible rim and tire: Verify both are approved for tubeless use and follow their manufacturer's fitment guidance.
  • Tubeless rim tape: Match tape width and application to the rim manufacturer's instructions; confirm that the tape seals spoke holes when required.
  • Tubeless valve: Choose an appropriate valve design and length for the rim, including any requirements for an insert.
  • Sealant: Use a sealant compatible with the tire, rim and valve components, in the amount recommended by its manufacturer.
  • Inflation equipment: Some tire and rim combinations may need a suitable high-volume pump or tubeless inflator to seat the bead.

Optional tire inserts

Tire inserts can add tire support or rim protection in certain setups, but they are not universally compatible. Check tire diameter, width, rim dimensions and insert manufacturer's instructions before buying.

Before the first ride

Check the tire's bead seating and sidewall markings, confirm that the assembly holds air, and stay within all relevant tire and rim pressure limits. Follow the manufacturers' instructions for setup and inspection. If something won't seat correctly or leaks persist, have it inspected rather than exceeding pressure limits.

Ongoing maintenance

Tubeless sealant can dry out over time. Recheck it on the interval recommended for the specific sealant and climate. Inspect tape, valves and tire casing when troubleshooting air loss, and replace worn or damaged components as needed.
